Billy Collins – Action Poetry

Billy Collins is one of my favorite contemporary poets. His writing is always crystal-clear, yet many-layered. A couple years ago I featured one of his poems, Man Listening to Disc, in my “Take a Stanza” series. A couple days ago I discovered (via 37signals) a little gem of a site that accompanies 11 Billy Collins poems with gorgeous animation.

Today: animation by Little Fluffy Clouds/Curious

The site is billy collins action poetry. Even if you’re not a big poetry fan, you ought to check it out. Edit 2022-08-05: The site no longer exists

Wow Karl – I just watched one – Forgetfulness. I think I’ll keep that one in mind mind for the day. It’s enough.
    Amazing.

    Hey Di,
Yeah, funny thing about that one. I picked up a book of Billy Collins poems one morning a few weeks ago, opened it up to a random page, and read “Forgetfulness” aloud to Sara. After the first few lines we were laughing, but by the end, both of us had tears in our eyes.

  4. Dad says:

I did check it out, Karl, and thanks. “Forgetfulness” is a vivid description of what happens when one ages – and it keeps happening, like the inverse of compounding interest, inexorably chipping away at the memory bank account.
I’ve not been a big poetry fan, but I, too, have really liked Billy Collins’ poetry – and how he reads it.
