Ben Wipes Out

A couple days ago Ben was testing out the playground equipment at the preschool he's going to start attending this fall. I wasn't there to witness it, but Sara assures me that he did a beautiful back flip before his faceplant into the wood chips. I guess he was pretty shaken up after the fall, but not nearly as much as he was once he got a look at his face in the mirror.
Of course, I'm frightened every day when I look in the mirror, but no child should have to go through that kind of trauma. It's a good thing that even with the scrape Ben's face doesn't look nearly as bad as mine does on its best day.

OUCH!! First of all, I'm just glad it wasn't more serious (like a broken bone, for example), and we can only hope that it wasn't deep enough to leave a scar (it won't, I'm sure). I'll bet it hurt his mother's heart about as much as it did his face. I am struck by the maturity showing on Ben's face. He's darned near as handsome as his father!!

Hi, Mom! Thanks for the note. I'm glad you like the photo. I took it with my Nikon D70 digital SLR camera. Ben was standing in the driveway north of the house, and the light was hitting him just right. The background is the driveway.
His facial expression, by the way, had nothing to do with the scrape; he didn't want me to take his picture, and I kept pestering him, shouting, "Ben, look at me! Look at me, Ben!" He was a little irked by that.
I think Sara was a little freaked out by the tumble, but she played it cool so Ben wouldn't freak out. I didn't get to see the damage until late that night. By the time I got home—at 6:00pm—Ben was already fast asleep in bed, with the scraped side of his face buried in his pillow.

Just rediscovered english rules & had to comment on this photo of Ben. Many months have passed and thankfully there's no trace of scar, but the photo of your handsome son is beautiful despite the wound...

Oh, oh , Ben dear - - Gramma's stomach wrenches at the sight of your beautiful face so scraped. Sweet child - consider yourself hugged and sobbed over.
Where was his face mask?? Was he wearing elbow and knee pads?? Playing on wood chips???? (guess that's better than blacktop - ask Uncle Andrew about that!)
karl - that's a gorgeous, if tragic, photo. tell me about how and where you took it. What's the flat grey background?
Guess this is rite of passage for every child, but oh my, poor darling. And poor parents - I bet you were both sick to your stomachs. Hugs to you too :)
